Kayaking the Boluisce River
Boliska lough is located just a few kilometers inland from Spiddal. The only public access route onto the Boluisce is by the small road/track down to the lake and then to paddle to the dam and on to the river.
When there has been heavy rain, kayakers can be seen head out to ride the river rapids. According to the Irish White Water website the river is a nice Grade III-ish run through the Connemara country side.
The Boluice is made up of two distinct sections, the long start and the short start. The Long start is made up of one grade 3+ rapid followed by a grade 4+/5 drop that is easily portaged. The bottom section begins below the long start and is made up of several grade 3+ rapids.
Full details regarding the put in location, the take out and a river description are available on the Irish White Water website. The exit from the river is influenced by the tide, so it’s worth checking the optimum time for your river. There’s also plenty of parking at the mouth of the river to load up the boats afterwards.
